Discover The Observatory Rooftop Bar Lounge

Tucked away in the heart of downtown Asheville, The Observatory Rooftop Bar Lounge at 68 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC 28801, United States, is more than just a place to sip a cocktail-it’s an experience that captures the city’s creative energy and mountain charm. The moment you step out onto the terrace, the panoramic views take your breath away. Asheville’s skyline glows against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, creating a setting that feels both upscale and comforting. Whether it’s sunset or a starry evening, this rooftop bar has a way of making every visit unforgettable.

From personal experience, the best time to visit is right before dusk. I remember arriving with friends one Friday evening, the air filled with the faint scent of pine from the nearby hills. The bartender, clearly a professional who knew his craft, suggested the “Smoky Mountain Mule”-a refreshing twist on a classic that paired perfectly with the cool night breeze. Watching him work was an art form in itself: precise pours, quick shakes, and an easy smile that made you feel like a regular even if it was your first visit.

The menu isn’t just an afterthought here-it’s part of the adventure. There’s a curated selection of small plates that balance Southern comfort with modern flair. Dishes like the fried green tomatoes topped with goat cheese and the bourbon-glazed pork sliders stand out, and the truffle fries? They deserve their own fan club. Each item feels intentional, crafted with fresh ingredients sourced locally whenever possible. Asheville has a growing reputation for farm-to-table dining, and The Observatory leans into that with confidence.

Professionally speaking, rooftop venues like this often struggle with consistency due to outdoor conditions, but The Observatory’s team has mastered the rhythm of service. According to a recent local hospitality report by the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association, venues that emphasize ambiance and quality service see up to a 25% higher return rate-and it’s easy to see why this place keeps guests coming back. The staff maintain a level of attentiveness that feels effortless, anticipating needs before you even have to ask.

It’s not just the drinks and food that make this spot shine; it’s the atmosphere. You’ll often hear a live jazz duo or a mellow acoustic set, creating a mood that invites conversation rather than competing with it. One night, a local musician shared that performing here feels “like playing for friends above the city.” That authenticity resonates through every detail, from the candlelit tables to the way the string lights flicker gently in the breeze.

If you’re visiting Asheville for the first time, this rooftop lounge is an essential stop. Locals use it as a go-to for celebrations or relaxed evenings, while travelers find it a hidden gem with unbeatable views. Online reviews echo the same sentiment-praise for the ambiance, the cocktails, and the sheer sense of place it offers. TripAdvisor and Yelp ratings consistently hover near the top, with customers noting the “spectacular sunset views” and “exceptional service.”

In terms of layout, the lounge is designed thoughtfully. The interior section has cozy seating, perfect for winter evenings, while the open-air terrace makes the most of Asheville’s mild seasons. The location on Patton Avenue places it within walking distance of popular spots like Pack Square Park and the Grove Arcade, making it easy to include in any downtown itinerary.

What sets The Observatory apart isn’t just its rooftop view-it’s the feeling it gives you. It’s where you can unwind after a long day of exploring, where conversations stretch long into the night, and where the city below feels like a living, breathing canvas. Every visit feels personal, shaped by the blend of atmosphere, flavor, and the unmistakable rhythm of Asheville itself.

  • Sorry to the server who had to deal with my 5.5 year old cranky daughter and her complaints of no strawberry shortcake. I just wanted to watch the sunset with some ice cream and a Prosecco for me and my wife. Nope. Even ordering a red velvet cake didn’t work! Probably because the cake wasn’t very good. But the view was great! I took her to the basement game room. Which went..

  • Hidden gem!!! If you want to enjoy a beverage with a view in Asheville, this is the place. We had early afternoon snack and drinks. Very relaxing. Great service. Great views on the rooftop.

  • We came here for my birthday and though the menu was limited the food was delicious! We had a flatbread and the Caesar. Steven provided great service and Chelcie made amazing mocktails! We are locals and tend to only go downtown during the week and it was a lovely experience.

  • This is a great rooftop bar. It is not as good as Flat Iron in terms of mountain views. However, it feels roomier and you’d an have a conversation without feeling like you have to hear a neighboring conversation. Service was friendly. Outside area could use some more shade, as could Flat Iron

  • This past Friday DJ David Donald, D&D Productions, Party & Wedding DJ had an event at the Restoration Hotel. Dave had such a good experience there that he insisted we come back for dinner at their rooftop bar, The Observatory Asheville. They have a simple menu, but they do what they do very well. I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere, the view overlooking Prichard Park and the Grovepark Inn, and the friendly and attentive service. Chelsea from the bar was also serving tables tonight and she went out of her way to ensure we had great service. The price was way less than I had anticipated. I started with a dirty vodka martini that was the best I've had in a long time. Dave ordered the Italian and asked for it hot and pressed. This sandwich comes with quality Italian salamis, sopresetta, calabrese, . (What's the plural of salami?) Ham, provolone, lettuce, red onion... he ordered it without the pepper relish and it was delicious and had a peppery kick even without it. I had the roasted tomato and basil toasted sandwich on focaccia. It comes dressed with roasted garlic ricotta, basil pistou, pickled onion and arugula. There was a bit of spice and the pickled onions & basil together gave it a lovely bright flavor. The sandwiches both came with chips that I would have sworn were made in house. I haven't had a good house made chip in a while. Chelsea said no, they are Dirty chips and even brought out the bag to show us the brand so we can get some at home. I love the rooftop resturant experience, and Dave and I have decided to seek out more good rooftop food. If you have recommendations, we appreciate it! The Restoration Hotel also has a Crave Dessert bar that we couldn't find, but we stumbled across The Draftsman Asheville bar and lounge on the lower level of the hotel. This is such a cool place with a beautiful bar, some retro video games, skee ball, jenga, and a couple lanes for bowling. I love the vibe here and hope to come back with friends!

  • The Observatory rooftop bar in Asheville is an absolute gem and easily one of the best spots in the city for a night out. From the moment we stepped in, the vibe was perfect—chic, relaxed, and full of great energy. The views from the rooftop are stunning, especially around sunset, and really add something special to the experience. The drinks were top-tier. Creative cocktails made with fresh ingredients, and everything was well-balanced and delicious. The bartenders clearly know what they’re doing. We tried a few different ones throughout the night and loved every single one. The food was just as impressive—elevated small plates with bold flavors that paired perfectly with the drinks. You can tell they put real thought into the menu. What really made the night was the atmosphere. The music, the lighting, the overall layout—it’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay all evening. Me and my friends had a blast just hanging out, laughing, and soaking it all in. The staff was friendly and attentive, too, which made the whole experience seamless. If you’re in Asheville and want a classy, fun spot with amazing views and great vibes, The Observatory is a must. Five stars, no question.
